Vaisala Rail Weather Applications

Adverse weather can cause major disruption to rail, light rail and metro systems.

Vaisala's Rail Weather System helps rail operators, maintainers and train operating companies manage the effects of adverse weather more effectively and efficiently by delivering accurate real time data, coupled with localised, site specific weather forecasts for a range of applications.

The system provides measurement and site specific warnings of hazardous winds, and advance warning and detection of icing on overhead contact wires and rails.   The system can also provide year round rail temperature data, along with precipitation and visibility information.

Localised, advance warnings allow users to target valuable and sometimes scarce human resources and plant  to where problems are forecast to occur  and to avoid such resources being unnecessarily deployed, so avoiding unnecessary costs and lost opportunity.  Savings are then realised by adopting this  pro-active approach to planning and operations management.

The system is based on a network of strategically located weather stations linked into a central PC server (RailCast).

Winter weather can cause icing on overhead contact wires. This can result in damage to pantograph mounted conductors and electric arcing. Short-term prediction & detection of icing on contact wires allows preventative measures to be taken..

Rail specific weather forecasts
Significant operational benefits can be realised by using site, and application, specific forecasts. These forecasts are more relevant and accurate than freely available text and hazard warning forecasts. Forecasters and forecast models use...
