Vaisala ROSA Ice Warning Station

The combination of Vaisala's ROSA Ice Warning Station and IceCast communication and display software is an easy-to-use, cost-effective solution for the remote detection of hazardous surface conditions. The ROSA Ice Warning Station provides real-time weather and pavement data to immediately inform decision-makers of ice, snow and low visibility.

The ROSA Ice Warning Station is compact and modular, making it easy to expand the number of sensors attached. The standard installation reports on surface and ground temperature, water layer thickness, air temperature, humidity, dewpoint and precipitation, and warns of black ice. The DRS511 Road/Runway Sensor plays the leading role in the ROSA Ice Warning Station. A particular strength of Vaisala's patented sensor technology is passivity -- there is no heating or cooling of the sensor itself. Normally, the minimum ROSA Ice Warning Station configuration will include precipitation detection as well as air temperature and humidity measurement.

Using the measurement data produced by the sensors, the ROSA Ice Warning Station determines the anti-icing chemical concentration, freezing point temperature and surface state. The surface state classifications are:
· Dry
·
Moist (& chemical)
·
Wet (& chemical)
·
Frosty
·
Snowy
·
Icy

The following alarms can be generated:

· Rain warning

· Frost warning

· Ice warning

· Ice alarm

The modularity and configurability of the ROSA Ice Warning Station allows several optional measurements, performed by the following sensors:

· Wind speed and direction sensors: WAA151, WAV151 and WAT12, or WMS301 or WAS425

· Visibility sensor: FD12

· Present weather sensor, reporting visibility and precipitation type: PWD11, FD12P

· Additional ground temperature sensor: DTS12G

· Pressure sensor: PMB100

· Snow depth sensor: SR50

· Up to 16 linked remote substations, each capable of adding 2 surface sensors and

  atmospheric sensors

The ROSA Ice Warning Station can be powered either by mains or solar power. Several battery backup options are available. A wide variety of communication options are supported including dial-up, leased line, GSM, NMT and radio modems.
